Don't change as the tension increases
It is expected that all referees must know and understand
the reasoning behind every rule and mechanic in the FIBA
manual. There is a purpose for every rule and every mechanic
so study the manual carefully and re-read it at regular
intervals throughout the year. Remember that nothing
replaces the need for COMMON SENSE in applying the rules and
mechanics. The rules and mechanics are GUIDES to good
performance , not GODS in themselves to be worshipped
without reasoning. With this preface in mind consider the
following principles necessary for effective officiating:
1. USE OF SIGNALS.
Standard FIBA signals only should be used to communicate to
the table officials , players , coaches , co-official ,
spectators and media. Try to add confidence and clarity to
all calls.
2. PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND CONDUCT.
First impressions are often lasting impressions. Punctuality
, dress , behaviour before , during and after the game are
significant factors in people’s assessment of you.
3. UNIFORM.
Be a team not individuals. Ensure before the game that your
uniforms are the same, clean , pressed and shoes polished.
Look professional and business like at all times.
4. PHYSICAL CONDITION.
Make this a year round , weekly project. Establish and
maintain an optimum level of physical fitness to enable you
to perform well in matches and fitness tests.
5. MENTAL PREPARATION.
Focus on your philosophy for the game as match day and jump
ball approaches. Concentration , composure and confidence
are key factors in how you handle the game.
6. PRE-GAME CONFERENCE.
An essential part of preparation with your co-official.
Discuss basic essentials and points of emphasis in the
privacy of the changing room. Prepare your team strategies. |
